NNPC Fixes price of kersene to N150

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) says the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has fixed N150 per litre as the official depot price of kerosene.
Tokunbo Korodo, the South-West Chairman of the union, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.

According to him, the price will encourage more importation of the product by the marketers. He said that most of the filling stations selling kerosene between N200 and N220 as the pump price was as a result of additional money on transportation of the product and some other levies paid by marketers.
The chairman said that at present, NNPC was the only importer of kerosene and was using private depots to sell the product.
“The NNPC has fixed N150 per litre as the new depot price of kerosene and has directed all its depots and private depot to comply with the directive.

Nyesom wike says he is not part of the Sponsors of Niger Delta Avengers.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has released a statement denying claims that he was a sponsor of Niger Delta Avengers. A faction of the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers had released a statement over the weekend that himself and some politicians including former President Goodluck Jonathan and some others were sponsors of their activities.

In a statement by his spokesman Simeon Nwakandu, Wike described the group's claim as “false media propaganda.” The statement reads;

“Our attention has been drawn to yet another false media propaganda wherein it was claimed that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike is one of the sponsors of the militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers. We nequivocally deny this false report which was fabricated with the aim of diverting attention from the superlative performance of Governor Wike. Any close observer of this propaganda machine would have noticed that all they do is concoct lies about Rivers State. We urge all well-meaning persons to disregard this current falsehood credited to a faceless splinter group of NDA.
This falsehood may not be unconnected to Governor Wike’s speech at the just-concluded conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors where he publicly declared that he and other stakeholders in the state have prevented militant groups from sabotaging oil installations as is the case elsewhere. Not happy with this declaration, they resolved to concoct another ill-conceived report trying to mislead the people. Nigerians already know what these propagandists represent. They represent retrogression , deliberate falsehood, under-development and biased unprofessional journalism. Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike is a patriotic leader, committed to the sustenance and improvement of the nation’s democracy and economy. He is a promoter of security and good governance. He cannot be disparaged by concocted publications from APC media agents.”

I never attacked Buhari - - Fr Mbaka .

Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, on Saturday advised President Muhammadu Buhari against marginanisation of any part of  the country in his appointments.
In the statement by his media aide, Mr. Maximus Ugwuoke, in response to media reports that the cleric attacked the President in a recent message, where he lamented the level of hunger and hardship in the country, Mbaka said that he only admonished the President against marginalising parts of the country in his appointments.
The statement reads, “Fr. Mbaka equally advised the President on being careful about how he appoints people to prominent positions, so that no region will appear marginalised, as happened in Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation board and charged the President to make sure that those around him are not misguiding him.

Strong indication emerged yesterday that the new Boko Haram leader, Abu Musab al -Barnawi, is the son of the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, according to a Boko Haram insider. The source told Cable Network news (CNN) that al-Barnawi, who is about 25 years - old was the second son of Yusuf, who founded the group in 2002 and was captured and executed after a clash with Nigerian security forces in 2009.

Obama says 20 states out of the 36 states in Nigeria are not safe .

The United States Government has asked its citizens living in Nigeria to stay away from twenty of the country’s 36 states which it described as unsafe.

The US Government, in an advisory published online, cited Borno, Adamawa and Yobe as a complete no-go areas.

It further listed Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara as unsafe areas.

The statement particularly urged vigilance around government security facilities; churches, mosques, other places of worship; locations where large crowds may gather such as hotels, clubs, bars, restaurants, markets, shopping malls; and other areas frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

The condition was in line with the severely limited ability of the US Mission to provide assistance to US citizens in those states and the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks, noting that criminals or militants have abducted foreign nationals, including U.S. citizens, from off-shore and land-based oil facilities, residential compounds, airports, and public roadways.

It noted that kidnappings remained a security concern throughout Nigeria, as criminal elements across the country orchestrated kidnappings for ransom.

“Security measures in Nigeria remain heightened due to threats posed by extremist groups, and U.S. citizens may encounter police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks throughout the country.

Luth issues statement on Former Unilag student suffering from Cancer Mayowa.

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, has denied involvement in the public appeal to raise funds for the treatment of Miss Mayowa Ahmed, one of it’s patients.

In a statement issued today, the LUTH management said contrary to any circulating information, the hospital did not refer Ahmed overseas and as an Institution, is not involved with any fund-raising activity or activist on her behalf.

The statement said LUTH has only dealt with Ahmed and her relations throughout her stay and not with any other third party.

“Mayowa Ahmed is an old patient of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital who has been on treatment for another condition. This 31year-old lady came into the Private Wing of LUTH on Monday, 25th July, 2016 with a history and clinical features of an intra-abdominal mass.

#SaveMayowa# gets dirty as police get involved.

The controversial Save Mayowa Campaign has added a new twist after the Founder of Lifestake Foundation, Aramide Kasumu, who was involved in the fundraising, alleged that the family of the ailing Mayowa Ahmed lied that only N30m had been raised while the correct amount was N85m.
The campaign was initiated to raise funds for surgery in a foreign hospital for Mayowa, who is suffering from ovarian cancer, but there have been allegations that the patient’s family was using her condition to defraud members of the public.

Kasumu, in a video posted online on Friday, appeared to have confirmed the allegations when she accused Mayowa’s family members of lying about the amount that had been raised for the patient.

She also accused the family members of attempting to shut out people involved in the fundraising and giving conflicting information about Mayowa’s situation and the hospital they intend to take her for treatment.

“The brother came to the public to say they raised N30m when in actual fact, they raised N85m,” she said in the footage.

“They came and said they had a visa when they didn’t have a visa; they solicited for funds to go to America but now they are saying they are going to Dubai. A lot of things were not adding up and they were not being straightforward. We were saying ‘why are you guys not being straightforward?’ What is our plan?

“And I was like, some things are not adding up here. I need to know what is going on and my concern is: I need to know if they are actually going to get Mayowa treated, that they are not just trying to take advantage of her situation which is my fight because you got me involved.

“People are asking me questions, I cannot answer. I sent Mayowa messages, she wasn’t responding. I called her phones; nobody was explaining anything to me. I said I need answers so that when people ask me, I can answer.”

Militant Attacks Forces Hotels to shut down as residents flee ogun state.

From Punch
Like a swarm of locusts leaving destruction and desolation in their wake, the invasion of some Lagos riverside communities by suspected Niger Delta militants has all but stalled the local economy of those areas.
Walking through some parts of Isawo and Igbo-Olomu, still feels like walking through a ‘no man’s land’ with shops shut, houses deserted and streets inhabited by nothing but domestic animals
Aside the immediate impact on livelihood and the fear forcing people to flee these parts of Lagos where many residents were slaughtered and shot by the militants about a month ago, Saturday PUNCH learnt that the attack had virtually grounded hotels in that part of Ikorodu and other areas such as Igando and Iba in Lagos.
“Only a madman will come here and lodge in any hotel at a time like this. People are running away and you want to come and sleep here?” an okada rider, who transported one of our correspondents around the adjoining communities said.
His fear echoed the general atmosphere of fear which pervades the communities.
Nothing in the façade of the first guest house our correspondent visited, Country Inn, could have suggested that it was even open for business at all. Its main gate was locked with a large padlock that seemed to scream ‘keep off!’

Rochas Okorocha and APC Governors wants Ekweremadu removed .

State governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have resolved to do all within their powers to ensure that Senator Ike Ekweremadu is removed as the Deputy President of the Senate

It was gathered that this was the fallout of the two-hour meeting the governors had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.
The Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, had initially told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that the governors had decided to intervene in the crisis in the National Assembly, without giving details of their intervention.
But a source at the meeting told one of our correspondents that the consensus at the meeting was that it was an aberration for Ekweremadu, who is a Senator from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, to continue in office as Deputy President of the Senate.
The source stated, “The governors sympathised with the President (Buhari) for working with a National Assembly that is largely seen as unfriendly.
“Particularly, they observed that in the absence of the President of the Senate, the next person is his deputy. They therefore agreed that it was an anomalous situation for a PDP person to continue as the Deputy President of the Senate.
“They sought and got the President’s permission to intervene in the matter in their own way.
Another source, who attended the meeting, said the decision was based on what happened during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The source claimed that Jonathan had, before leaving office, released N2bn each to the PDP states at the time from the Ecological Fund.

An investigationh has revealed the assets of Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Lieutenant-General Abdulrahman Dambazau (ret.) has discovered that he and his wife own properties in the US whose total worth, in millions of dollars, raise questions about the source of the minister’s funds. Two real estate consultants told our correspondents that the properties traced to Mr. Dambazau have an estimated value in excess of three million dollars in the US alone.

The  investigators found that the minister’s real estate holdings include an impressive and expensive and huge seven-bedroom house he purchased in Winchester, Massachusetts, a few miles outside of Boston. The property cost $1.99 million. How Civil Servant Wife and security agent Defrauded Politicians Of N85m Using Tinubu’s Name

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday remanded a couple in prison custody for allegedly impersonating former Governor of Lagos State, Chief Bola Tinubu to commit fraud.

The couple, Abioye Junaid, 41, and Fausat Junaid, 39, are facing trial on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraud, stealing and impersonation.

The prosecutor, DSP Charles Odii, told the court that the couple and others still at large conspired and committed the alleged offences between October 2014 and December 2015, at their residence, No. 7 Ayeola St., Oke Balogun, Epe, Lagos.

“The accused had falsely presented themselves as Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria,’’ Odii said.

He said that the accused obtained the sum of N15 million from one Ambali Abiodun, under pretext of making him a commissioner in the Lagos State Government. The prosecutor also alleged that the duo obtained the sum of N70 million from one Otuniyi Adeniyi, under pretext of making him the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a representation they knew was false.

The prosecutor further stated that the accused stole the money from their victims.

Suspected Earthquake in bayelsa & Rivers Nigeria.

Suspected earth tremor in parts of Bayelsa and Rivers States, has caused palpable apprehension among residents of the affected communities in the two oil-rich states. Residents of the areas noted that the tremor caused serious cracks on the walls of their buildings though no injury was reported.

It was learnt that in some of the impacted communities such as Igbogene and Akenfa in Bayelsa as well as Akinima, Akie-Oniso (Oruama), One Man Country and Mbiama – neighbouring communities in Rivers, many people who experienced it were yet to recover from the trauma.
There were heavy vibrations that lasted for some minutes during the incident which was said to have started at about 12 midnight.

An earth tremor , Wikipedia says, is the perceptible shaking of the surface of the earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the earth’s crust that creates seismic waves. It adds that a tremor could be violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities. Nigeria reportedly experienced tremors in 1933, 1939, 1964, 1984, 1990, 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2009 in various parts of the country. A retired Principal and landlord in Igbogene, Bayelsa State, Chief Etekpe Friday, described the experience as “frightening”. “We were about to go to bed when I heard a heavy vibration. I thought it was something else so I quickly went into prayers,” the 60-year-old man stated.

Solomon Arase left the Police Force with 24 Vehicles- - New Acting IG .

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, says his predecessor, Solomon Arase,  went away with 24 police vehicles while the seven Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, who retired alongside him, also carted away between seven and eight cars each.

Idris stated that he had written Arase to return the cars, which included two official bullet-proof BMW 7 series cars, adding that the retired police chief and his DIGs had yet to return the vehicles.
The IG, who said this during an interview with journalists on Sunday in Abuja, explained that a special investigation team was already looking at the records of police vehicle purchases in the last three years as well as how they were distributed.

Arase, however, denied the allegations of his successor, saying he didn’t go away with any police vehicle.

Fed. Govt is ready to tackle Civil service Fraud through reforms .

From Punch
A report from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation showed that N763.64 billion was spent between February and April this year on salaries and pensions. Interestingly, an analysis showed that while N181.52 billion and N182.7 billion were spent in February and March respectively on salaries, the figure spiked to N268.28 billion in April.
The curious increase may have been as a result of the usual fraud in the payroll, which the government has been trying to mitigate. Adeosun said in May that the civil service monthly wage bill was N165 billion, and believed the figure was bloated. It is a scourge the previous administration confronted with the introduction of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System reform. Between 2010 and the first quarter of 2015, the scheme weeded out 60,000 “ghost” workers from the payroll. Adeosun’s predecessor, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said that the government saved N160 billion annually by doing so.

However, the Muhammadu Buhari administration has continued to sieve the payroll, and has also discovered more than 60,000 “ghost” workers. According to Adeosun, the inherited IPPIS platform is defective, as the syndicate behind the scam continues to devise new strategies to undermine it. Such knowledge should inspire fresh strategic thinking on how to improve it.

Before now, cloning and PIN harvesting through electronic chips cleverly concealed in the Automated Teller Machine (ATM), was the universal mode. Over time, the tricks and decoys to entrap their victims keep changing and have assumed a disturbing dimension. Continue...

The Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is on the trail of a suspected ATM fraudster, who goes by the name Akinade Tofunmi. Her trade in stock is identity theft. Her duty post is any ATM Point and Point of Sales (POS) machines across the country.
However, she does not ‘work’ during the official hours of the week rather; she operates late in the night when all bank transactions had closed and preferably over the weekend when her ‘prospective’ victims might not be able to alert the banks for any unauthorised transaction. In her last operation, within twenty four hours; this fraudster who operates with the identity of her victims succeeded to have raked in about three million (N3m) within 24 hours.
Dateline was Friday, June 3rd, 2016, at about the close of work. A woman simply identified as Alhaja and her husband who was waiting in the car wanted to use an ATM somewhere in Ibadan, Oyo State, when Tofunmi noticed that the woman limps. Pretending to be polite and cultured, she offered to assist her with the transaction on the ATM. Unaware of the intention behind the pious approach, she gave the fraudster her ATM card and divulged her PIN. Smartly, the fraudster quickly checked the balance in the account which had one million, seven hundred and forty nine thousand, twenty six naira and seven kobo (N1, 749, 026. 07). After the intended withdrawal of N20, 000:00, the fraudster swapped the card and gave Alhaja a fake ATM card. Oblivious of the swap, she left with her husband.

Shortly before midnight, the fraudster started the ‘harvest’ of her booty. She withdrew one hundred and thirty thousand naira. Having exceeded the daily withdrawing limit for that day, she waited for a few minutes to the following day which was a Saturday. Shortly after midnight, she made another rounds of withdrawals to the tune of one hundred and fifty thousand naira which was also the daily limit for that day. However, Alhaja and her husband had no one to run or call that night to save the situation when the debit alerts start coming in torrent.
In a desperate need of where and how to empty the balance in the account, she went to a night club where she met a motorcycle transporter, popularly known as Okada whom she approached for a help. Her decoy was that she had enough money in her account but could not access it having exceeded her daily withdrawal limit. She showed the bike man her balance and pleaded with him to give her his ATM card, account details and PIN for a quick teller transfer from her (Alhaja’s) account to the bike man’s account. With that, she has been able to secure some of Alhaja’s money in the bike man’s account thereby stealing the identity of the unsuspecting bike man.
